Pokemon Company announces $5 million in donations to nonprofit orgs

The Pokemon Company International has announced that it will donate a minimum of $5 million to nonprofit organizations around the world.

The official statement on its @Pokemon Twitter account said « … donations will go toward improving the lives of children with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. In our ongoing commitment to the Black community, this will include organizations supporting education and mentorship opportunities for Black children. »

A specific list of charities will be revealed at a later date.

This will match a $5 million pledge made by Niantic, the makers of Pokemon GO. The donations will be made following Pokemon GO Fest 2020, taking place virtually on July 25-26.

« We’re so incredibly grateful to our partners at The @Pokemon Company group who are also donating a minimum of $5 million to nonprofit organizations following #PokemonGOFest2020. Together we aim to be a force for change, » Niantic tweeted in response to the Pokemon statement.

Pokemon had previously announced a donation in a June 3 tweet, saying the company would be making a $100,000 donation to the NAACP and a $100,000 donation to Black Lives Matter.

« We stand in solidarity with our Black employees, fans and families who continue to be impacted by systemic racism and senseless violence, » read part of the tweet.

This is the largest public donation from a video game company to diverse causes since the death of George Floyd and ongoing protests across the United States. On Thursday, Activision Blizzard made a minimum of $2 million commitment to similar causes, while this weekend’s Call of Duty League home series event hosted by the Minnesota RØKKR will include a strong fundraising component, with RØKKR players wearing jerseys with « Justice for George Floyd » written on the front.
